English

This term, in English, we are studying the following texts:

Children will be writing narratives for both texts, as well as recipes and postcards.

Maths

We use White Rose Maths. Below you can see the small steps we will be learning in the Summer term. Each small step usually represents one lesson. However, sometimes we may take a few extra lessons to learn and consolidate some of these maths skills. 

Our maths focus areas this term are: Multiplication & Division, Fractions, Position & Direction, Place Value, Money, Time

 

Essential Letters and Sounds (Phonics)

We continue our reading journey in year One through ELS Phonics. Below you can see the order in which we learn this throughout the Summer term:

Science

In Science during the first half term we will be learning about introduction to plants, where we will learn to:

  • Identify plants and their features.
  • Recall some of the roles that flowering plant parts have.
  • Name some trees and their parts.
  • Identify similarities and differences between deciduous and evergreen leaves.
  • Recall that seeds and bulbs come from plants.
  • Recognise that seeds need water for growth.
  • Raise questions about plants and respond to suggestions on how to set up an investigation to answer a question.
  • Use a magnifying glass to observe the different parts of flowering plants.
  • Draw and label a diagram of a flowering plant.
  • Use an identification chart to name flowering plants.
  • Sort plants into groups based on specific criteria.
  • Use non-standard units to measure leaf length.
  • Recognise similarities and differences in seeds and bulbs.
  • Recognise that predictions do not always match observations.
  • Identify which plant parts can be eaten.
  • Recognise that scientific research into plants leads to important discoveries.

In Science during the second half term we will be learning about investigating science through stories, where we will learn to:

  • Identify the typical weather associated with each season.
  • Describe animal features.
  • Recognise similarities and differences between animals in the same animal group.
  • Build an animal home with natural materials.
  • Explain the difference between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
  • Carry out online research to find answers to questions.
  • Measure length in centimetres.
  • Suggest how to carry out a waterproof test.
  • Begin to recognise if a test is fair.
  • Use data to answer questions.
  • Recognise patterns in data.
  • Group birds according to their diet.

Computing

 In computing this term we are learning about group & sorting and animated story books.. We use Purple Mash to help us learn about computing. You will find your login details in the back of your reading diary. https://www.purplemash.com/ 

History/Geography

How have explorers changed the world? 

In our Summer 1 history topic we will learn to:

  • Discuss their favourite toy using language related to the past.
  • Explain what explorers do
  • Name equipment or transport an explorer would need.
  • Sequence four photographs from different periods of time.
  • Name important explorers (e.g. Christopher Columbus, Dame Ellen MacArthur, Matthew Henson and Mary Kingsley).
  • Identify where they travelled and write a sentence about the achievements of one explorer.
  • Select the most important events in a historical story.
  • Sequence events on a timeline and use this to retell the story.
  • Describe what they can see in a photograph.
  • Make inferences about what a person in an image could be saying and ask questions to further their understanding.
  • Recall information about past and present exploration.
  • Understand events in relation to the present day and compare how exploration has changed over time.
  • Describe how an explorer is significant and how they impacted events or people’s ideas.
  • Show understanding of significant people by designing a coat of arms.

What is it like to live in Shanghai?

In our Summer 2 geography topic we will learn to:

  • Give examples of human and physical features.
  • Identify features they see on a walk.
  • Explain the location of features using some directional language.
  • Use an aerial photograph to locate physical and human features.
  • Draw simple pictures or symbols on a sketch map.
  • Draw compass points.
  • Name the continent they live in.
  • Use an atlas to locate the UK and China on a world map.
  • Use an atlas to locate Europe and Asia on a world map.
  • Identify China’s physical and human geography.
  • Sort physical and human features using photographs.
  • Identify physical and human features in images of Shanghai.
  • Compare Shanghai to their locality.
  • Identify similarities and differences between human and physical features.

Art/DT

In DT we are learning about cooking and nutrition - smoothies. We will learn to:

  • Describe fruits and vegetables and explain how to identify fruits.
  • Name a range of places that fruits and vegetables grow.
  • Describe basic characteristics of fruit and vegetables.
  • Prepare fruits and vegetables to make a smoothie.

In Art we are drawing and painting flowers, while learning about the work of artists Edith Holden & Orla Kiely

Music

In Music we will be exploring pitch, timbre, tempo and dynamics this term. 

 

PE

In PE this term we are learning the following:

Net and Wall Games

  • Throw, catch, hit a ball, track a ball

Striking and Field Games

  • Underarm throw, catch, track, bat

Yoga

  • Balance, strength, flexibility, co-ordination. 

We also have our forest school sessions this term, which is part of our PE curriculum.

RE

We follow the Worcestershire Agreed Syllabus for RE. 

Our key question this term is:

  • Who is Muslim and how do they live?

PSHE

In PSHE we are learning about:

  • Economic Wellbeing
  • Transition

Enhanced Curriculum 

Forest School

Year 1 have forest school on a Thursday afternoon starting on Thursday 3rd April, and finishing Thursday 22nd May (after Easter). The final session for each year group will be in the morning, and family members will be invited in to join the children around a fire.

Children are to come to school in uniform and bring their own kit in to school on a Thursday to change in to. This includes: a change of clothes, waterproofs, wellies/walking boots, gloves, hat, bag to put wet items in at the end of the day

LOTC 

Year 1 have learning outside the classroom for two hours every other Wednesday afternoon. Children need to bring in dark jogging bottoms and wellies for these weekly sessions.  Please see our Outdoor Learning page for more information on  LOTC

Reading, Spellings & Times Tables at home

It is expected that parents will support their child’s learning through nightly reading and practising spelling words. Creative tasks may be set at points during the year that children can complete to support class topics or other whole school themes e.g. arts week or science week.


Expectations for homework

  • Reading: Children will receive a reading book and a sharing book each week. Please encourage your child to read their reading book every day and log this into their reading diaries. Shared reading books should be read by an adult to their child.
  • Spellings: children  will receive weekly spellings. Please support your child in learning these.
  • Whole School Challenges: Throughout the year there are a range of special challenges e.g. make a bird feeders related to whole school initiatives. These tasks are optional and are in addition to homework set by class teachers.
